We all love our beloved endangered sea turtles in South Walton. Hurricanes Fay and Ike put a damper on many of the local nests, but hope springs eternal for the future of the Leatherback, Loggerhead, and Green.
Since most all of us are inclined to do the right thing when we can, many folks purchase a Sea Turtle license plate to help the worthy cause. But many wonder, where does your $23.00 donation go when you purchase a Sea Turtle license plate?
Through research, conservation and habitat management, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is working to maintain sufficient nesting sites for our endangered marine turtles. Funds collected support these efforts as well as a Sea Turtle Grants Program, which supports on-going work around the state.
2008 Year-to-date sales of the Helping Sea Turtles Survive specialty plate total 53,204.
The BuyAPlate Program is managed by the Wildlife Foundation of Florida. To learn more about it and how you can help, visit their website: www.wildlifefoundationofflorida.com
