Memorial Day ceremonies in north and south Walton May 28

North Walton – 8 a.m.
A Memorial Day Service will be held at the Gum Creek Cemetery located north of DeFuniak Springs off State Road 83 near Glendale, Florida. The service will be held on May 28, 2018 and will begin at 8 a.m.

The guest speaker this year will be Thomas T. Remington also known as Judge Tom Remington. Judge Remington served as a U.S. Army Infantry Platoon Commander with the 2/503 Infantry, 173rd (ABN) BGE. (SEP), Viet Nam War.

The Gum Creek Cemetery is one of the oldest in Walton County and is thought to be over 160 years old. The cemetery marks the final resting place of veterans from American’s wars all the way back to the early 19th Century, with 12 known Civil War Veterans and one confirmed Seminole War veteran.

South Walton – 10 a.m.
Gulf Cemetery will host their annual Memorial Day ceremony with military guest speaker, World War II Warbirds flyover, fighter jets fly over, music and a reading of the interned veteran’s names. Bagpipes, raising of flag, presentation of colors, and more.

The event will be from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Gulf Cemetery is located at 1466 South County Hwy. 393, Santa Rosa Beach.
