Lots of fun activities for kids this summer in Walton County

June 7, 2010

swimmerA variety of activities in store this summer!

Local area clubs, camps and recreation facilities are offering summer programs for children. Below is a list of programs available this summer in the Walton County area.

Coastal Branch Library summer programs

This year there are three themes for the Walton County Library’s summer reading program:  “Make a Splash READ,” “Make Waves at Your Library” and “Water Your Mind READ.” This year the programs for the Coastal Branch Library will begin June 16 and run through June 30.  They will be on Wednesday afternoons at 2:00 pm.

Nonie Maines teaching children about frogs. Lori Ceier/WaltonOutdoors.com

June 16 – Nonie’s Ark will return with her “Animal Encounters”.  Nonie has an extensive background in zoo animal technology and wildlife education.  She loves to help children learn about wildlife in a fun, adventurous way.  Her traveling hands-on zoo includes seven animals.  The opportunity to learn and experience wildlife helps children develop an understanding and appreciation of the world around them.

June 23 – Topsail Hill Preserve State Park Rangers Fred Provost and Leda Suydan will present a program on sea turtles found in Florida waters.  These majestic sea turtles are gearing up for another reproductive season.  The loggerhead sea turtle is a slow swimmer with long flippers and special glands that let it drink salt water.  The smallest turtle is the Kemp’s ridley that grows to just two feet and 90 pounds.  The green sea turtle is a distinct species with individual face markings and can grow to three feet and 350 pounds. This will be an enlightening program on how to help preserve these awe inspiring creatures of the sea.

June 30 – there will be musical entertainment and a sing-along.  Bob and Doris Mueller will play their mandolins and Wylie Selman is bringing ukulele students Jessica and Alexis Lord and Bailey Tolbert to help with the entertainment.  Mr. Selman plays the ukulele and the banjo combo.  There will be hands-on opportunities for the children to try their hand with the instruments themselves.  The Friends of the Coastal Branch Library will provide juice and cookies after the programs and Doris Mueller will be helping with the programs.  The children who want to participate in the reading program can pick up reading logs at the front desk from June 1 through September 3.  The children who read ten books will get prizes and books.  Even pre-school children can participate if a parent reads to them.  So here’s to summer.  We are going to have a good one at the library.
