Lake Powell clean up September 19

August 25, 2015

Last year 560,000 volunteers from 91 countries picked up more than 16 million pounds of trash during the 2014 International Coastal Cleanup. In our little corner of the earth, we have a very unique and precious resource. LAKE POWELL was designated an Outstanding Florida Waterway in 1991. It is among the largest of the rare Coastal Dune Lakes which occur in only a few places around the world. The Lake Powell ecosystem is known for it’s beauty and biodiversity, as well as, it’s exceptional recreational and educational opportunities.

The Lake Powell Community Alliance (LPCA) is dedicated to protecting this natural resource. Together with the St. Andrew Bay Resource Management Association, Friends of Camp Helen State Park, and our Local neighborhoods they invite you to participate in a community effort to JOIN the TEAM KEEP it CLEAN. Last year’s effort involved 100 volunteers and netted 4000 lbs. of trash. It’s time to pitch in again.

Sign-in will begin promptly at 8 a.m. at the Lake Powell Park [boat ramp] or at Camp Helen State Park, Saturday September 19th, 2015. The Cleanup will last until noon. After the cleanup, come visit with the LPCA, Bay County Audubon and other groups at their ‘Eco-booths’ in Lake Powell Park. Learn about local conservation efforts. The first 75 volunteers will get a free tee shirt. Participate in a ‘Chance Drawing’ and you may win some very nice prizes!

This is a great opportunity to bring our community together for a common cause! Individuals and teams are welcome. At sign up, we will assist volunteers in choosing a team, and teams will be given a choice of areas to clean up. Clean up areas will include choices for walking, wading, boating, and paddling.

What to bring: closed-toed shoes, hat, sunscreen, ‘grabber’, work gloves, water, and snacks. Please consider bringing your boat, canoe, kayak or paddleboard and join the armada of cleanup crews! If you do bring your watercraft, be sure to bring required life jackets, whistle, and other safety devices. We will provide: vinyl gloves, garbage bags, data cards, coffee and donuts, water, and snacks.
