Enjoy the spirit of giving and volunteer for Habitat For Humanity’s Women Build

In late February, Habitat for Humanity of Walton County volunteers who have been working on House # 19 in Mossy Head, will be passing the hard hat over to a team comprised exclusively of women for the inaugural Women Build project.

The Women Build teams will install trim work, hang cabinets, paint, landscape, and complete the punch list to prepare the home for the new occupant.

Women Build is a Habitat for Humanity International program that encourages women to make a difference by building homes and communities. Women Builds provide an environment in which women can feel comfortable learning construction skills they might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn.

The women will work side by side with homeowner, Mary Scott. Scott, a long time Walton county resident, will be relocating from a trailer and is excited to be moving into her own home.

Local Nellie DeBruyn who has been involved with Habitat for Humanity locally for more than three years is spearheading the program.

Originally from Minnesota, Nellie started volunteering with Habitat For Humanity’s Women Build back in 1992.

“Ideally, we would like to build an entire house from the slab up,” Nellie said.

About the Women Build
Habitat for Humanity started the Women Build project in 1991 with a group of women in Charlotte, NC.

As of the beginning of 2010, Women Build volunteers had helped build more than 1,650 houses. A record 252 Women Build homes went up in 2009.

The program continues to grow across international borders, empowering women everywhere to address poverty housing for themselves, their families and their neighbors. Dozens of international Women Builds have taken place, and the program aims to direct financial assistance to women-led projects worldwide.
