CHELCO’s new electric rate gives members choices

October 14, 2010

A new rate allows members to benefit from being energy conscious

You can take control of your electric bill when you sign up for the new Time of Use rate offered by CHELCO. With the Time of Use rate, you are charged different amounts based on the time of day you use the electricity. This reflects the differing costs of power paid by CHELCO. During off-peak times, the rate will be reduced to 5.736 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). During peak hours, the rate will increase to 10.880 cents per kWh. By adjusting your usage patterns, you could see a considerable savings on your bill.

Peak hours are May through October from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m., and November through April from 5 a.m. until 9 a.m. Peak hours are those times of day when members are using the most electricity. Off-peak hours are any time that is not an on-peak hour.

The customer charge of $24 and the Wholesale Power Adjustment (WPA) will remain a part of the monthly bill. During on-peak hours, members who take advantage of the Time of Use rate will want to conserve as much energy as possible. For example, either set your thermostat up 10 degrees or shut it off completely in the summer. During winter, set your thermostat on 62 degrees. A programmable thermostat is a great idea to help you set the hours. Place a timer on your water heater so it shuts off during peak hours. Don’t wash or dry laundry, and don’t use the dishwasher. Shut off lights and ceiling fans, and unplug vampire electronics.

This rate is available to all residential members and requires a 12-month commitment. If you are interested in being in control of your rates and controlling what you pay, you
may visit any of CHELCO’s convenient area offices to sign up. If you have questions or would like to discuss the rate plan, please contact Member Service at 892-2111 or 800-342-0990. You may also click here. Members will not automatically be placed on this rate. You must sign up. If you do not sign up, you will remain on CHELCO’s standard residential rate plan at 7.046 cents per kWh, plus WPA. Commercial Time of Use rates are also available for small commercial (non-demand) accounts. Please contact CHELCO for this information.
